Claire's Closings

Malls are dying. Shoppers are taking their business online, and mall stores are going out of business, leaving only empty storefronts behind.

Claire’s, an iconic tween jewelry and accessories store, is the latest mall staple that needs life support. The company filed for bankruptcy recently, announced that a handful of stores are closing immediately, and has now dropped the hint that over a thousand locations could close.

Here’s what we know, including a full list of doomed stores.

Why Did Claire’s File for Bankruptcy?

Claire’s filed for bankruptcy on August 6, 2025 — and it’s actually the second time the chain has filed for bankruptcy protection in the last seven years. Since the first bankruptcy, the company, which also owns Icing stores, has continued to struggle as people skip malls and shop more online.

According to a press release from the company, “increased competition,” “the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail,” debt obligations and economic factors were all cited as reasons for the filing. Uncertainty about tariffs has also affected the company’s ability to pay back loans.

Is Claire’s Going Out of Business?

Claire’s bankruptcy filings in court indicate that it plans to close 1,100 stores soon, with an additional list of 18 locations that are closing imminently.

It’s also trying to find a buyer for the remaining 800 Claire’s and Icing stores. If it can’t find a buyer soon, the company will have to close all of its locations and go out of business, according to Reuters. So unless a company wants to pay millions to keep a nostalgic mall store around, things are not looking good for the brand.
