More Than S’mores

There’s plenty of magic that swirls around camping: The fireflies and stars lighting the night sky, the sound of frogs and crickets chirping, the smell of the campfire, and the opportunity to slow down and find new ways to prepare your meals away from the comforts of home. There are so many creative fireside recipes to embrace while camping, and the dessert realm stretches far beyond the traditional s’mores we all know and love. Check out these creative campfire dessert recipes.

1. Campfire Snickers

We’re not sure who came up with the idea to dip a mini Snickers candy bar in Fluff and toast it over the fire before skewering it with a pretzel stick, but we’re pretty confident this concoction was a product of the munchies. Whatever the origin may be, we are 100% trying this.

2. Campfire Chocolate Cake

We won’t lie: Thinking about what an open fire and a cast-iron skillet would do in terms of depth of flavor to a chocolate cake has us sweating and drooling all at once.

3. Cast-Iron Skillet Brownie

The walnuts, chopped pecans, and caramel bits for this skillet brownie recipe are considered optional, but unless you’ve got an allergy, we can’t imagine a scenario in which you wouldn’t want to include those delicious tidbits.

4. Smoked Strawberry Crisp

If smoky flavors are exclusive to things like ribs and brisket in your mind, we urge you to open up your mind and consider smoky desserts. Infusing this fruit-forward dessert with smoke is the perfect way to balance the tartness of the berries and the richness of the crisp topping.

5. Dutch Oven Blueberry Cobbler

Two ingredients. One baking vessel. That’s it. That’s all you need. Put canned blueberry pie filling in a dutch oven, top it with crumbled up sugar cookie dough, and let that bad boy dangle over the fire until it’s cooked. Oh baby.

7. S’mores Dessert Pizza

S’mores are tried, true, and they belong on any and every campfire dessert menu. But there’s no law that says you can’t get a little creative with your interpretation. Turn your s’mores into a pizza instead using similar ingredients with a different preparation.

8. Walking S’mores

If your only beef with classic s’mores is that they’re too messy, this walking s’mores iteration is genius. Get those individual packets of Teddy Grahams and throw your mini marshmallows and chocolate inside, warming everything over the fire. Easy as can be!

9. Campfire Eclairs

Cooking crescent roll dough over a fire before stuffing it with pudding and/or whipped topping and slathering hazelnut spread over the top sounds so tantalizing it should be a sin — and if it was, we’d indulge and ask for forgiveness.

10. Campfire Cones

Fill a waffle cone with ingredients like fruit, peanut butter, mini marshmallows, and chocolate candy bars. Warm over the fire. Grab a plastic fork and dig in. That’s all there is to these! We can’t think of a better way to finish off a dessert than to devour a waffle cone lined with melted chocolate remnants.

11. Apple Pie French Toast Rolls

Break out the vanilla ice cream for these little guys! Flatten your sandwich bread, fill it with apple pie filling, roll it together, then dredge it in your egg mixture to fry up in a cast-iron skillet over the fire. Finish these off with cinnamon sugar and your taste buds will be forever indebted to you.
