Retail chains are dropping like flies this year, but one company is making a comeback. Big Lots, which filed for bankruptcy last year, originally announced that it would close almost all of its stores. Since then, another company has stepped up to reopen hundreds of Big Lots locations, and will be opening more soon. Here’s the latest on the Big Lots saga, including the full list of more than 70 stores opening in early June.
It’s been a bumpy road for Big Lots after filing for bankruptcy in September 2024, citing inflation, less demand for furniture and decor due to a sluggish housing market, and an overall slowdown in spending as the reasons for its money woes.
Since then, a company called Variety Wholesalers, which runs other discount chains like Bargain Town and Roses Discount, has purchased hundreds of closed Big Lots locations. That company is planning to reopen 219 locations, and has reopened many already.
Variety Wholesalers has already reopened more than 100 Big Lots locations. Nine of them opened in April, and 132 have already opened earlier this month.
