Compact Case

Compact cars have been increasingly squeezed out of the market in favor of larger vehicles such as SUVs and trucks — yet the unpopular compact-car segment offers some of the most reliable vehicles you can buy. In addition to being affordable, they are known for their efficient gas mileage, reasonably sized cargo holds, and well-trimmed cabins, and they’re what you'll wish you had when trying to wiggle into tight parking spaces. Here are some of the highest-rated compact cars to look out for.

What Is a Compact Car?

We’re looking at hatchbacks and sedans that fall between the subcompact and midsize classes in proportions and price. Government regulators define small or compact cars as having between 100 and 109 cubic feet of combined passenger and cargo space and measuring between 161 and 187 inches long. It can get confusing — Motor Trend wrote not long ago about “Why the EPA’s Vehicle-Size Classes Make No Sense” — and some of our selections might appear listed as subcompacts.
