Blue Bunny's Blue Ribbon

Frozen desserts are looking better and better as the sun gets hotter and hotter, and the feeling of reaching into your freezer and pulling out a tiny little ice cream cone is only getting more wonderful.

If you're going with Blue Bunny, which you absolutely should, you might feel a little bit of buyer's paralysis when you see all the options available. The good news is that I popped into my local grocery store, tried seven different flavors, and now I'm an expert. Come with me; here's what I found.

Methodology

Plain and simple here, folks. I tasted all of these fresh out of the freezer, and looked to judge them in a few ways.

Does it taste like a real ice cream cone? Is it too decadent? Would I buy this again? Does it make a gigantic mess all over the ground? Is it worth that gigantic mess?

Here's how they stacked (scooped?) up.

These cones landed in a pretty high slot in my ultimate grocery store drumstick ranking, and there's a reason for that. They're great.

In a three-ingredient dessert, you need the ingredients to speak for themselves, which is exactly what happens here. The chocolate shell has a surprising depth of flavor and the ice cream is cool and creamy, all melting down into one final funnel towards the bottom of the cone. Aces, Blue Bunny.

Blue Bunny's caramel flavor is the same thing as a vanilla cone, but with a little nuggie of goopy caramel in the middle of the ice cream. I don't think the cone needs caramel since it's better off as simple as can be, but look, I'm not gonna not eat a dollop of caramel with my ice cream.

This is like an Oreo combined with a Hershey's Cookies 'n' Cream bar. It's very crumbly thanks to the cookie topping, but what's most interesting is the white swirl that surrounds the thing, rather than the typical chocolate. There are some white chocolate notes in there, which I usually don't love, but in this case I'm all about it.

And there's a little bit of chocolate in the middle of the vanilla ice cream, too. That bunny thought of everything.

Chocolate cone, chocolate ice cream, chocolate shell. Is that too much chocolate for you? Luckily Blue Bunny's cones are tiny, so I can get through one of these without a chocolate comet crashing down on top of me. It's hard for me to believe that the ingredients used in these frozen treats could be of such a solid quality, but they taste that way. What a job those fine folks have done.

When it comes to the classic peanut-covered drumstick, I'm usually afraid of leaving a messy smattering of dust, cone crumbles, and peanuts below. But these peanuts are good. They're roasty and nutty, and best of all, bound tightly to the chocolate shell. Though I normally shun this type of dessert, in this case you can call me Colin Farrell, because I'm all like, "more peanuts, please."

I like strawberry shortcake in real life. I also like this cone, though it could potentially be a challenge to get through the whole thing. BB's Strawberry shortcake cones are also swirled in that white coating, and with the strawberry ice cream and Dunkaroo-esque icing, this whole thing sits semi-heavily in the stomach. It's not too far off from drinking a bunch of strawberry milk, which I have found never ends well.
