Picture this: You grab the container of baby powder and unknowingly cover your infant in asbestos. Unfortunately, that's the image the latest product recall conjures up. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration just announced that a baby powder recall due to asbestos has been expanded to include more cases of the product that were shipped to 35 states. Here's how to tell if your baby powder is part of the recall.

What's Wrong With the Baby Powder?

Some baby powder made by Dynarex Corp. is being recalled because it may be contaminated with asbestos. It's a naturally occurring mineral and known carcinogen often found near talc, one of the ingredients in baby powder, but it is usually removed from the product. During routine sampling and testing by the FDA, the finished product was found to contain asbestos. Thankfully, no illnesses or adverse affects have been reported.

What Baby Powder Is Being Recalled?

Dynarex Corp. is recalling about 1,100 cases of Dynacare Baby Powder. That includes 435 cases of 14-ounce Dynacare Baby Powder and 647 cases of 4-ounce Dynacare Baby Powder bottles. The recalled products were sent to distributors on or after Jan. 18, 2024.

How Can I Tell if My Dynacare Baby Powder Is Recalled?

The recalled Dynacare Baby Powder have item number 4875 or 4874 printed on the bottles and on the case. There is also a batch number, manufacture date, and expiration date printed on the bottom of each bottle. Compare the information on your bottle of Dynacare Baby Powder to the chart on the FDA recall announcement to determine if your bottle is part of the recall.

Where Was the Dynacare Baby Powder Sold?

The recalled Dynacare Baby Powder was distributed to 35 states: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, and WI. It was also sold online on Amazon, so you may still have the recalled baby powder even if you don't live in one of those states.

What Should I Do if I Have Recalled Baby Powder?

The FDA is advising anyone with the recalled product to stop using it immediately. Consumers can return the product back to the place of purchase for a full refund.
