Bodacious Birthdays

‘Go big or go home’ seemed to have been the motto of birthday parties in the 1980s. Every party, whether for a 3-year-old or an adult, was themed, and families regularly broke out the ice cream cakes, paper party hats, and loot bags. If you lived through the ‘80s, chances are you went to a few middle-class birthday parties that looked a lot like these throwback photos.

Pizza Party, 1981

Pizza parties were the holy grail of birthday parties for kids in the ‘80s. The more balloons and pitchers of soda, the better.

Being the Queen That I Am, 1984

Birthday party headwear was huge back then, and if your parents were really into parties, they got something fancy for the birthday kid. This girl is donning a crown in front of her pile of wrapped gifts.

Mac Tonight Birthday Party, 1987

Have you ever seen a McDonald’s birthday party that looked like this? That giant, strange moon-headed thing is Mac Tonight, the chain’s attempt at a cooler Ronald.

ShowBiz Pizza Horror, Late 1980s

ShowBiz Pizza Place was a knock off Chuck E. Cheese (and one of several pizza chains that no longer exist), so you bet it hosted kid’s birthdays. Somehow, these kids don’t seem to be freaked out by the incredibly creepy mascot.

4th Birthday Party, 1984

This guy showed up looking swanky to a little kid’s birthday party. But he fits right in, because everyone is dressed well, even the kids.

Birthday Party at Chuck E. Cheese (1987)

Birthday Party at Chuck E. Cheese, 1987

Compared to ShowBiz, the mascot version of Chuck E. Cheese looks downright friendly in this ‘87 photograph, despite being a rat in a restaurant.

Feeling a Little Unsure, 1988

This third birthday girl looks a little unsure about her Chuck E. Cheese party. Maybe she’s just not into the matching hats, tablecloth, and placement (but we are!).

6th Birthday Present, 1984

This very lucky girl received an awesome present on her birthday in 1984: Rick Springfield’s Living in Oz album on record. We would have been proud enough to hold that one up for the camera, too.

Who Wants Cake? 1987

The girl in this photo looks sweet as she patiently waits to eat her brother’s birthday cake. The large TV and glass soda bottles on the table are remnants of another time.

When McDonald’s Was Fancy, 1982

Everyone at this McDonald’s birthday party looks so dressed up. The little girl with the pageboy haircut is clearly proud of her cheeseburger, but unsure of the photographer.

Hug From an Icon, 1989

Some kids were scared of Alf, an alien from another planet in his namesake sitcom, but others loved him. This kid is clearly in the latter camp, since he got a big hug from Alf for his birthday.

Just Blowing Out My Candles, 1982

Justin here has got the right idea about blowing out birthday candles. The decorations are top notch, too, with little hot air balloons at each place setting, and Winnie the Pooh napkins, too.

First Birthday Cake, 1983

It looks like the first birthday girl is already smashing some cake in this photo while big brother hungrily eyes the rest of it.

The Happiest Kid in the World, 1981

This boy looks so pleased with his birthday cake, his Spiderman shirt, and his paper cone hat. We’re intrigued by the lace tablecloth and drapes, too.

Four Generations, 1983

The birthday kid’s mom, grandma, and great grandma are all in this photo, making it a family keepsake forever. We bet the birthday kid smashed that cake not long after it was taken!

Grandmas Know Best, 1983

Grandma made this young man’s birthday cake, which, judging by the candles, is for his 13th birthday. Of course she made it in the shape of a heart.

Burger King Party, 1980

The kids at this Burger King 5th birthday party seem to be having a great time. The old school striped uniform is a trip, but those paper BK crowns have looked exactly the same for decades

Birthday Party Classics, 1981

There are two 1980s birthday party classics in these photos: a cake with a doll sticking out of the top, and a hired magician pulling a rabbit out of nowhere. Only back then would those two things have left kids awestruck.
